チベット曼荼羅仏画展によせて （2008年11月25日から12月26日まで）

タンカは、チベットでは「巻物」という意味を持つ言葉で、日常では仏像と同様に扱われています。時に難解な教典も、カラフルな彩色や繊細な描画によって美しく視覚化され、仏教の普及に大きく貢献しました。
一方、タンカは重要な修行のひとつ、「瞑想」に使用される法具でもあります。一般の人々にとっては、各種祈願に大変重要な役割を果たす「お守り」や「魔よけ」として用いられています。吉祥文様、占星術柄、薬草などが描かれているタンカは、主に祈願のためです。
2007-2008年にかけて、アートギャラリー・ノルブリンカに集められた仏画（タンカ；thang ka)は、現在、ネパールに亡命中のチベット人仏画師によるものです。仏画師としてのキャリアが少なくとも20年から30年以上の世界最高峰の技術をもつ職人の作品のみを厳選いたしました。ユニークなものとして、チベット医学辞典「四部医典」からも2-3点、また、制作できる職人が数少ない24金で描かれたタンカもご紹介できることになりました。どうぞトップレベルの技術の証明となる、細微な線描、高度なグラデーション技術、洗練された色彩バランスにご注目ください。
見入るほどに引き込まれそうになるチベット・タンカ。人間の存在価値にアートで迫るチベットの智慧の深さをごゆっくりお楽しみください。なお、今回の展示は、ケンポ・カルテン・リンポチェとユンテン・リンポチェ、お二人の高僧のご尽力が得られなければ、実現しませんでした。心より御礼を申し上げます。

The Tibetan word, "thangka" means "something that can be rolled up." thangka represents teachings of Buddha, and the most important function of a thangka painting is as a religious aid in ritual actions, or as a guideline and a help in meditation. But thangka are more than religious visual aids. They are also commissioned when problems such as illness, death, or abstract obstacles - in personal or social matters- arise in a family. The thangka thereby gains the function of a "lucky charm" or amulet. This is why some thangka display nothing but lucky symbols, astrological configurations, or medicinal plants.
All the Tibetan thangka painting in this exhibition are works by exiled Tibetan painters*1 in Nepal. The thangka painters have a career as a thangka painter over 20-30 years and also deserve artisans who have a top leveled skill. For this exhibition, we've chosen high qualified thangka paintings that are especially for meditation, spiritualization. Also, some interesting chapters from Tibetan medical dictionary, "Gyu si" were picked up.
On a final note I hope you enjoy the world of Tibetan thangka that is supreme art by Tibetan Buddhists and would like to thank to two Tibetan tulks*2, Kenpo Karten Rinpoche and Yunten Rinpoche. I could not accomplish this exhibition without the great help from both of them.
